Illustrator Profile: Lena Merhej

Lena Merhej is an illustrator and animator whose work we find very charming. Lena taught illustration at the American University of Beirut and at the Lebanese American University, and has hosted workshops in animation, illustration and comic books. She is part of Samandal organization for the promotion and publication of comics. You should check out her story “Yoghurt and Jam” on the organization’s site, it’s worth a look.

Her animation “Drawing the War” won the Jury Award at the New York Exposition Festival and was screened in various local and international venues. Her comic book, “Kamen Sine” took the award of best comic book at FIBDA 2009, Alger. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Jacobs University Bremen, specializing in visual narrative.

Her children’s book illustrations have been published by Dar Kalimat, Dar AlHadaek, Dar Assalah, Dar Onboz and Dar El Ilim Lil Malayin. Check out the gallery of some of her awesome work.

لينا مرهج فنانة ورسامة تعمل في مجالات عدة منها مجال رسومات كتب الأطفال. وعملت لينا كأستاذة جامعية في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت وفي الجامعة اللبنانية الأمريكية، وهي عضو في مؤسسة سمندل لترويج ونشر القصص المصورة

ونالت لينا عدة جوائز عالمية لرسوماتها وقصصها المصورة، وهي اليوم تتابع دراستها التخصصية للحصول على شهادة الدكتوراة من جامعة جاكوبس في ألمانيا

Nadine Touma is a Lebanese author, artist and filmmaker. She has created numerous literary works and artworks, and participated in exhibitions in Lebanon, Egypt, and throughout Europe. In 2006, she founded the publishing house Dar Onboz together with Raya Khalaf and Sivine Ariss. Dar Onboz was born out of a desire to anchor art in the everyday life of children.

Nadine Touma’s children’s book Doodles received an honorable mention in the New Horizons category of the 2007 Bologna Ragazzi Awards. Tabati won the 2012 Opera Prima Bologna Ragazzi award at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

Nadine lives and works in Beirut.

When night falls they each go to their home and become a lullaby for the baby to sleep. Tabati is a wonderfully visual work which won the Opera Prima Bologna Ragazzi award for 2012  at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.
