A Fruitful Partnership- ReadingStart and LBBY

This post has been a long time coming. We’ve been planning on sharing some wonderful news with all of you and have been waiting to set some things in place. This past spring, ReadingStart partnered with the Lebanese Board on Books for Young People (LBBY) in order to take its project “Tell me a Story” to the next level. As a result of this collaboration, “Tell me a Story” won a large grant in May 2014 from the Sharjah/ International Board on Books for Young People Fund. The grant allows the project to continue reaching families in Lebanon until January 2016. We began operating under the conditions of the grant, in partnership with LBBY, in June 2014. We’ve been busy running workshops, conducting reading sessions with kids, providing mobile libraries and distributing book packages. We’ve also managed to organize a small book fair at the education center of our partner clinic Tahadi.

Many of the children who are enrolled at Tahadi’s center live in abject poverty. Books are prohibitively expensive, but thanks to the very generous support of Asala Publishers, we provided kids with books that they were able to afford. The point behind a book fair was to give children agency over their literary choices, something donated books can’t do. Also, we felt that purchasing their very own book was an empowering exercise. For most of the 160 children who purchased their very own book, that purchase was the first book introduced into the household. But, we’ll let the pictures do the rest of the talking….
